Out To Pasture
Old or new, it doesn’t really matter to me as long as it’s got some sort of character. I have a little fondness for old, used cars – there’s a kind of modern anthropology about riding around in a car that’s carried so many other drivers and passengers before me. What faded note or forgotten cassette tape will I find in the glove box? What did they listen to on the radio? Where did they go on Friday night?
I’d seen this old Herbie a few times on the way home from our happy hour spot, Jax. Each time I passed, I’d slow down a little, stare out my window, and imagine myself in that cute little bug. I thought about the guy or girl who had loved it and revved the engine a little at traffic lights. I’d think about how if the price was right, I’d pick it up – just for goofing around on the weekend.
I go through this a lot – I know I can scrape together $1500 for that old beater that would just be the coolest toy for the summer.
After eyeing it for a month or so, I finally told Allan that I wanted to take a look at it – if it was in running shape I’d buy it and throw a cheap, loud stereo in it and love it all summer long. Allan’s owned an old Beetle himself, and I think seeing the flicker of excitement in my eyes sort of rekindled his need to tinker. I could tell the idea piqued his interest, too.
We pulled over, and I tried to stifle the hop in my step as I got out of the car. Never let the salesman see how bad you want it.
I looked Herbie over, and disappointedly noticed all the rusted out pitholes, the completely destroyed interior and a list of other things I’m not equipped to fix. Allan flatly objected: "Twenty-six hundred dollars? This isn’t worth $500."
Sadly, I knew Allan was right.
So, I just contented myself to come back and take a few pictures and leave the rest of it to my imagination.
